Hill Street Studio
“An ideal environment for singing lessons in San Francisco”

My spacious, inviting, and private studio in San Francisco is dedicated exclusively to making music. It's fully equipped with a Yamaha Professional Series studio grand piano, state-of-the-art recording, printing, and reproduction equipment, and an extensive music library. The studio's dais offers an intimate stage for vocal exploration, expression, and performance.

Hill Street Studio

The studio is located at 329 Hill Street in the Dolores Heights neighborhood, just a few blocks from Dolores Park and the heart of     Noe Valley. My central Bay Area location has proved convenient for students from San Jose, Novato, and Pleasanton, and is 15 minutes      by car from the San Francisco International Airport. Street parking is   easy and available.

I have the pleasure of teaching the transformative art of singing.    I work with a great variety of students, including active professionals, local singing teachers, and young artists auditioning for top music schools, training programs, and festivals. I also teach beginners and dedicated amateurs from many walks of life.

My students have achieved the highest honors of the performing arts. They perform with major opera companies, Broadway theaters, and national tours. They include Tony Award winners, major motion picture stars, international pop artists, and acclaimed cabaret singers.

My own performance experience alongside top professional singers and theater artists, has reached across North America and Europe. This work, as well as more than 25 years of teaching experience working with hundreds of singers and actors at all levels, richly informs my teaching. Above all, my teaching is motivated by a lifelong passion for music, and the joy, understanding, fulfillment,  and contentment that it brings to everyone it touches.

Finally, I am indebted to my own extraordinary teachers,       whose legacies, knowledge, and compassion I strive to pass on          to my students.

My method

My distinctive method is rooted in my earliest musical experiences as a boy soprano, followed by training as a concert pianist and conductor. Through this training, I developed a comprehensive understanding of music theory and a perceptive musical ear. This discipline was followed by years of performance experience, study with a master vocal teacher, and over a quarter-century of working with great singers and actors. Drawing on this experience, my method combines traditional Bel Canto technique—using the words and exercises of Lamperti, Garcia, and Marchesi, and the vocalises of Marchesi and Vaccai—with passionate, integrated acting to achieve the highest and most complete level of training for the modern singer.

This technique is not only adaptable to all styles of singing, but it also prepares and supports the singer for a long career of consistent vocal health. Bel Canto dissolves the limitations inherent in many other techniques: students quickly establish a full vocal range, solid breath management, and expansive use of all the resonators. Dynamic control and natural musicality follow as we build the integrity of the student's unique vocal instrument. In this way, the Bel Canto masters guide us through the intricacies of craft to the beauty of vocal artistry.
